The LaGrange Academy Lady Warriors played small ball on Tuesday, and it helped them come up with a big region win.

Facing Windsor Academy in a GISA Region 4-AA matchup, the Lady Warriors used some well-placed bunts and some other timely hits to win 5-3.

LaGrange Academy (5-1 overall) improved to 4-1 in the region and remains one game behind Flint River in the standings.

“One good thing today that was positive was we had some big base hits,” LaGrange Academy head coach Charles Parker said. “We had some girls that stepped up there today. Heather Gooch had a big base hit. Tasza (Garrett-Hammett) did too. We laid down some beautiful bunts that forced them to hurry up and not make plays. Actually, I think the turning point in the ballgame was they didn’t get their bunts down and we got our bunts down. I believe that was the turning point in the ballgame.”

Another high point for the Lady Warriors came in the field where they had no errors after committing five errors last week against Flint River.

Senior pitcher Sumer Coile worked in and out of trouble for much of the day to get the win.

LaGrange Academy got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Abby Walker singled to center field with one out, and Gooch came to the plate and lined a double into right field that brought Walker in to score to make it 1-0.

Windsor responded with a run in the top of the second, but Coile stranded a pair of runners on to keep it a 1-1 game.

In the bottom of the third, LaGrange Academy got its second run of the game, with Walker scoring on a Coile double to center field.

Windsor responded with a run in the top of the fourth to tie it, with Coile working out of a bases-loaded jam to keep it deadlocked at 2-2.

The Lady Warriors pushed a pair of runs across in the sixth to take its biggest lead of the game.

Garrett-Hammett led off with a double off the center-field fence, and Ali Herring came through with a sacrifice bunt to move Garrett-Hammett to third.

Walker then laid down a suicide squeeze, and Garrett-Hammett slid by the tag at home to give LaGrange Academy a 3-2 lead.

With Walker on first base, Coile helped her own cause by beating out an infield hit she smacked back to the Windsor pitcher.

With runners on first and second, Gooch drilled a line drive to center field that scored Walker from second, and LaGrange Academy was up 4-2.

The Lady Warriors notched their final run in the fifth inning.

Caitlynn Croft walked on four pitches,and Brandi Smalls later looped a single into left field to plate the fifth and final run.
