A West Point man was charged with drug possession after a vehicle and foot chase early Sunday.
According to a sheriff’s report, a deputy tried to pull over a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee Turning onto Teaver Road from West Point Road about 2 a.m. Sunday for not dimming its headlights, but the vehicle didn’t stop. The deputy and SUV sped up to 70 mph down Teaver Road and the SUV’s driver allegedly ran a stop sign before he turned onto Newton Road, hit the brakes and jumped out.
The driver ran into the woods, but fell several times, the deputy said, until the deputy caught the runner, handcuffed him and discovered a small bag of pills on the ground next to him. The suspect, identified as Ashley Lamar Hubbard, 32, said he fled because he had drugs, had been drinking and had an active warrant, the report said.
Hubbard had a cut on his eye and finger, which he said were from an accident at work and running into a tree during the chase, according to the report. EMS treated Hubbard at the scene and the deputy found an open container of alcohol in the car and more pills in the area where he chased Hubbard, which were suspected to be ecstasy.
Hubbard was charged with possession of ecstasy with intent to distribute, DUI, open container, fleeing and attempting to elude an officer, reckless driving, obstruction, probation violation, failure to dim headlights, driving with a suspended license and driving with defective tires.
