Stop playing ‘Mama Jama’

Dear Editor,

In your 06-06-12 article “‘Mama Jama’ chosen as grand marshal of Fourth of July parade,” you reported that Debbie Burdette is not sure if she will be appearing in the parade as herself or her character “Mama Jama.” I would like to suggest that the choice should be easy.

Debbie Burdette is a respected community leader who has devoted countless volunteer hours to promoting literacy.

“Mama Jama,” on the other hand, is a racist character that offends people by reducing African culture to a silly caricature and undermining equality in our community. Jelani Cobb, former professor of African Studies at Rutgers University, explains, “The more we look at people as caricatures, the harder it is to operate as a democracy. What underlies this kind of costuming is the belief that these people aren’t quite equal to what we are, or aren’t as American as we are, or that you as a person who’s not a member of that group should be able to dictate how painful the stereotype should be.”

If Burdette shows up to the Fourth of July parade wearing a costume of traditional African clothing, the lesson she’ll be teaching our children is that she can do no wrong because of her white privilege. I hope that Burdette will decide to do the right thing and respect everyone in our community as she serves in the honorable position of grand marshal.

Further, because I do not want my tax dollars to support everyday racism, I have started a petition to ask the City of LaGrange to remove the “Mama Jama” show from our government TV channel. You can sign the petition at the following URL:

http://www.change.org/petitions/city-of-lagrange-georgia-remove-mama-jama-from-tv

Sincerely,

Scott Smith

Scott Smith as much as I despise your negative comments about any issue you think might bring you into the spotlight I would not wish you on any other town! Unfortunately you are our case study here and we have to learn to deal with you - fortunately most people realize that the apple doesn't fall from the tree when they put the connection together of you and your dad!!! Mama Jama has done more for our town to promote literacy than anyone else including YOU!!! She is loved by all the children no matter what color - I challenge you to find just one elementary school student who thinks that Mama Jama is offensive then after you find that one needle in a haystack report back - that should keep you quiet for a while!!! If you would focus your energy on something more productive you might actually make a difference in the world! Would you be interested in being Papa Jama????? Go ahead Mike reply back for your son!!

Scott Smith -- you are an idiot! No big words, no paragraphs. She is a volunteer -- she does not get paid! Burdette's only reward is that of helping children in our community!

What are you doing to help children in our community?

Other than hiding behind a race card and stirring trouble for the community, WHAT is your contribution?

Our Mama Jama Obligation

There is always resistance to progress, but LaGrange was designed with excessive resistance. As an unfortunate consequence, some of us do not understand our obligations.

It is the fate of some folks to be as invisible as possible so as to avoid the harsh treatment exacted on their families for generations. In contrast, people with more security and contentment have an obligation to consider their actions in the broader context of a society with a long history of racism supported by powers of state, industry, religion, and foundation.

Responsible citizens must choose a response to displays of anachronism in deference to our racist history. My response is that Mama Jama is just as unacceptable as Sambo and blackface.

Hum ...it took people 12 YEARS to decide Mama Jama is an African.I thought she was a psychic like sister sonya. 12 years of free story hours ,devotion to reading programs ,countless hours of service to the community and instead of thank you Scott Smith spits in her face.

I just find it hard to believe someone would petition the government to make a white woman dress and act like a white woman is suppose and at the same time call HER the racist.... unbelievable!

If this article had not been written by Scott Smith, would there have been so many comments, a lot of them very hateful and often off topic? There were ones regarding fashion and even religion so what did those have to do with Mama Jama?

You don't think it's a bit ironic that the guy who wrote a book calling the callaways racist and fascist now is all of the sudden taken it upon himself to call a citizen the very same thing when that citizen just happens to be married to a guy who works for the callaways? (A fact he mentions in his own blog post for his book?) And is calling for removal by online petition? One of the least reliable forms of petitioning available but the one form most likely to get a positive result... it's dragging someone through fake mud for what seems to be more of a book selling stunt than anything else... and he is apparently viewing the loss of mama jama as a positive thing to our kids who in today's world of Nintendo and cartoons need some.motivation to pick up a book and read...

No there would not have been so many comments, but most of Troup County is tired of hearing his rhetorical b.s.! If Scott Smith thinks so much is wrong with our city and county, then he needs to find a place to live that will please him. Why would someone continue to give money to something they do not like...i.e. Taxes, etc...? And as a parent, I certainly would not raise my children in an environment that I thought was unsuitable! On the other hand...if he thinks he can make a change...he needs to put his name on the ballot or shut up. Then we will see how much influence he has in the "Greatest Little City in America"!

I DO NOT know WHO Scott Smith IS and 'I' left a comment in SUPPORT of Mama Jama, I can't remember if it was on this particular site/story, but I DID leave a comment in SUPPORT of her through another story on Lagrange Daily News through facebook. SO Scott Smith ain't all that big "where the only time someone whould leave a comment is if it was made by him." I don't even know who the fellow IS. If Scott didn't start the "hate" then there would be no one to "hate" back DUH. Of COURSE there were comments "ones regarding fashion" because THIS is what Scott is talking about, and again, DUH.

Ridiculous. I hope that picture is more to prove how listless your beard is rather than your mind.

I'll sign a petition that pretentious when I have the ability to buy a big enough Hummer just to huff the gas fumes it gives off.

Whatever you do, whatever time you give, don't just live to troll — troll to live.

How absolutely inane (that is to say – unintelligent, frivolous, mindless and – at best – silly) is the following comment “’Mama Jama’, on the other hand, is a racist character that offends people by reducing African culture to a silly caricature and undermining equality in our community.”

Go Debbie and the few like you who dedicate a portion of your lives to enhance the lives of those who are not touched by the many like your critic. Inane it is that your criticism is prefaced by praise – then, followed by criticism and contradiction.

Enough said – understandable it is that a person who supports the right of someone to walk around exposing their butts to the public – would find it unacceptable that someone like Debbie should walk around dressed in brightness, color, and hope. Scott – you indeed have a problem – ask your dad for some guidance.

It is the fate of some folks to be as invisible as possible so as to avoid the harsh treatment exacted on their families for generations. You will not easily find them objecting to their circumstance for fear of getting more of the same. Many have done so, and are no longer with us. At the same time, you may see some walking in the street with pants quite low. Even that small act of defiance (or custom) brings on the wrath of those who think of themselves as superior. In contrast, those with more security and contentment would seem to have an obligation to consider their actions in the broader context of a society with a long history of racism supported by the state, by industry, by religion, and by various foundations. That may be where the problem lies, and each must choose his or her response. My response is that just as Sambo and blackface are unacceptable, so is Mama Jama. There is always resistance to progress, but LaGrange was designed with excess resistance. Similarly, some of us understand our obligations, and some of us do not.

The main reason this situation suddenly has become any sort of so-called "issue" at all, Scott -- public or private -- is because you have taken it upon yourself to make an issue out of it. I know several of the most prominent black leaders in our community, am around a couple of them now and then, and never have heard any of them utter one single negative comment pertaining to Debbie Burdette's "Mama Jama" role. Furthermore -- along a different verbal track -- contrary to what you obviously think, the fact you have had a book published does not necessarily nor automatically make you so much more intelligent than the rest of us that you are in a position to hurl the equivalent of lectures at us. Unfortunately, your arrogance, narcissism, and overly liberal mindset -- now combined with your defensive stances -- will not permit you to realize or accept it. I would compare my collegiate and graduate degrees to yours anytime, as well as my academic achievements, awards, honors and memberships in the honor societies of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Alpha Theta, and Phi Eta Sigma. Ergo, having you think you are qualified to "instruct" me about racism -- or any other subject, for that matter -- offends, insults, and sickens me. I respect the amount of intelligence you obviously do have and especially your right to utilize your freedom of expression; however, I definitely to not have to respect you in your entirety as a human being nor accept or condone your personal vendettas and rabble-rousing tendencies for the sakes of stirring up trouble and being in the public limelight. The very pathetic turnout for your "occupy the square" movement already should have indicated how few people endorse your overly liberal antics. Only if and when I hear and/or read statements made by the majority of notable and educated black community leaders themselves against the "Mama Jama caricature" will I be more inclined to agree with you in this regard. Otherwise, I will just "consider the source" and view it as yet another effort to inflate and satiate your already-full ego.

My only disagreement with your response would be the stance of only listening to "notable and educated black community leaders" on this subject matter. Narrow-mindness is often seen in people of all educational levels, color and creeds. Everyone is entitled to hold opinions regardless to how ignorant or disconnected they may be. I am black and I am not a notable black community leader but I feel that anyone who devotes their time and passion to better others and enrich lives, should be commended and not condemned. So let Mama Jama play!

God does indeed work in mysterious ways. Little do the Mr. Smiths realize, but they have done more to promote Christianity in Troup County than anyone. They have caused people to examine their commitment to their faith in God and speak out as they may not have done otherwise without the prompting of the Mr. Smiths. For that I am grateful that God has made even them an instrument of His mighty works. I've always known that God has a sense of humor.

As a teacher in the school system, I have personally seen the wonderful things Mama Jama does for our school system and the students of Troup County. Shame on you for even suggesting racism at all. She loves the children of this community and does more for them in an ordinary month than most other citizens will do in their lifetime!

Our students love you Mama Jama! Keep up the good work!

I think she is dressed as a fortune teller personally. Seems others think the character is creole. Maybe its got an egyptian touch to it? Or maybe its just some colorful clothes that she put on to grab the attention of the future of our community to inspire them to read? Thats part of the beauty of it. Kids have imaginations and she is some many things to so many different kids. How is she supposed to dress? As a white lady? Well now, we have offended those white people in the community saying that there is a way white people are supposed to dress. She could be a cat? Well now PITA is upset. What about her reading, her selection of reading, her actions, or anything about Mama Jama, do you see as african american oriented? And as far as those in the community that its offending, then I think only those people in the community that are offended should be allowed to sign your little petition and not people from Minnesota, Texas, Columbus, Florida, Alabama etc...

Thanks for your comments! Here are my responses: Mr. Troup, the "Mama Jama" TV show appears on our city government channel, LGTV, which is funded by our tax dollars. (The City of LaGrange may not levy a property tax, but that doesn't mean that our city officials run the operation with funds from their own pockets, and I hope you don't think that's the case; I suggest that you call City Hall and ask how they collect their funds.) Dawg, Debbie Burdette is a public figure, an elected official, and an actor on a government TV channel; that's why this is a public issue, not a private matter. Stone, I agree that there are a lot worse things out there, but that doesn't make this wrong any less wrong. Joey Crockett, I agree with you, as I stated in my letter, and I hope that Burdette continues to volunteer without adopting a character that offends people in our community.

It seems to me the only problem with mama jama is that she isn't black... and had miss burdette been black then her character wouldn't be offending you... which is racist... also mama jama seems to be dressed as a Creole character... can you please specify which culture she is actually offending? Before we petition the city to become fashion nazis I think would should judge this woman not by the color of her skin but rather the content of her character... a character which many children and parents of all races love and are inspired by...

Debbie Burdette has given her time selflessly to encourage our children to read. Anyone with children knows the importance of getting a child excited about reading. Her character, Mama Jama, does just that. We are lucky as a community to have Mama Jama. I would like to personally thank her for being The Storytelling...Mama!

Before once again exhibiting your narcissistic, self-righteous, pompous, radical, rabble-rousing persona by choosing to criticize Debbie Burdette's role as "Mama Jama" and initiating a petition to stop her show on the local TV station -- in the process falsely accusing her of portraying a "racist caricature" -- did you bother to ask her exactly why she chose the outfit she wears and where she obtained it? I very seriously doubt it. I can assure you that she does not possess a single racist tissue in her body and actually conducts many of her programs among and/or for black children in the housing projects in Troup County in attempts to help them better their lives and overcome what otherwise would be almost insurmountable emotional and education obstacles. You definitely need to learn when to keep your mouth shut and your fingers off of your keyboard. However, I will not waste my time by holding my breath while waiting for either to occur.
