The Troup High Thespians will open their 2012—2013 season of plays this weekend with the comedy revue “A Thurber Carnival” and a canned food drive.

Performances are slated to benefit the Troup Thespians’ Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat canned food drive. Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. performance will feature a one-time only discount admission price of $2 plus two canned good items. Matinee performances will be Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Admission to these shows will be $5 with a $1 discount for donating at least one canned food item. All canned goods collected at the show will be donated to the local Salvation Army.

“Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat is a project sponsored by the International Thespian Society that allows our school troupe to support those in need in our local community,” said cast member and Thespian Society vice president Samantha Arnold. “Bringing canned goods to school and to our performance is a small price to pay for a child’s smile.”

Sophomore cast member Blake Harcey added: “In our theatre department, we have a lot of caring people. We’re always ready to help someone out, and this in one way we’re showing that.”

“A Thurber Carnival” features some of James Thurber’s most celebrated and insightful satires: “The Night the Bed Fell,” “Gentlemen Shoppers,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” “File and Forget,” “Mr. Preble Gets Rid of His Wife” and “The Last Flower.”

The Troup High production, under the direction of Carol Cain, spotlights a cast of more than 30 students with musical accompaniment by pianist Eve McKibben.
