With Tuesday’s 6-2 victory over Jackson (Atlanta), the Cavaliers are 5-1 overall, and they’re 2-0 in Region 4-AAA.
Perhaps as important as the wins, Hunt feels the team is getting better every day, which could bode well for the season’s home stretch.
“Every game, it’s getting better,” said Hunt, a senior who scored one of his team’s goals. “We improved tonight, but there’s still stuff to work on. There’s still stuff we’re trying to improve on.”
Tuesday marked the Cavaliers’ first game against a region foe, although they came into the game with a 1-0 region record because of a forfeit by Douglass.
It wasn’t a contest.
The Cavaliers dominated the action, and the game was well in hand when Jackson managed a pair of late goals.
Despite the comfortable win, head coach Jake Hembree made sure his players know they have to maintain the same level of focus and intensity from the first minute until the last.
Hembree felt his team let up a bit, allowing Jackson to score two goals in the closing moments.
“That’s what we don’t like to happen,” Hembree said. “Once you get relaxed, that’s when that happens.”
Still, Hembree is proud of the way his players have responded this season, and he feels they’re all making a concerted effort to get better.
“Our guys are really learning a lot. They’re catching on,” Hembree said. “It’s a hard game to learn. But I think we’re getting there. I think we’re finally seeing how to play, how to move the ball around and stuff like that.”
As for Tuesday’s game, the scoring was spread out, with Hunt, Tyler Neese, Kevin Craig, Kyle Jenkins and Cameron Spinks each scoring at least one goal.
With the game in hand with plenty of time to play, Hembree was able to substitute freely and get everyone some time on the field.
“It was nice to be able to get all of our other people in,” he said.
Callaway will try to improve to 3-0 in the region when it hosts Rockmart on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
