Three Troup County School System teachers were surprised this morning with the announcement that they are finalists in the system’s Teacher of the Year competition.

Superintendent Cole Pugh, accompanied by the TCSS prize patrol, visited the finalists at their schools bearing flowers, balloons and the good news.

The three finalists are:

• Jorine Silcox, fifth grade reading, language arts and writing teacher at Franklin Forest Elementary School, is the Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

• Jason Graham, seventh grade social studies teacher at Long Cane Middle School, is the Middle School Teacher of the Year.

• Carol Cain, high school drama teacher at Troup High School, is the High School Teacher of the Year.

The Troup County School System Teacher of the Year will be chosen from the three finalists on March 20 at a reception that also honors all system Teacher of the Year nominees.

I was a student in Carol Cain's class years ago...I am 44 now and I still remember her. She was a wonderful teacher and obviously left an impact on me. She always had a positive attitude and a big smile that could brighten up any student's day. She made learning fun. I am glad to see that she is still teaching because good teachers like her are very hard to find. If I had a vote she would sure have mine. But then again, I guess I am biased, congratulations to all the finalists, I am sure they are all deserving!!!!
