With a freshman pitcher coming through with a strong outing, the Troup Tigers (2-1) outlasted the homestanding Opelika Bulldogs 5-3 on Thursday.

Freshman Winston Turner made his varsity debut, and he pitched four solid innings.

Jacob Ozley finished things off by throwing the final three innings.

“I was pleased and proud of Winston,” Troup head coach Craig Garner said. “He was very poised for a freshman. He made some big pitches when he needed to. He did a great job.”

The Tigers scored two runs in the second inning, two more in the third and one in the seventh.

Bruce Danford led the offensive effort with two hits.

“We’re still trying to find our way. (The offense) improved, but our base running got worse. It cost us a few runs,” Garner said. “That’s what this is for is to get everything ironed out, and get everybody on the same page and working out all our kinks. Hopefully we’ll get it all together.”

Troup will be back home on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. home game against Auburn.
