Fayette County swept the meet, defeating the host Tigers and Callaway.
In the first match, Fayette County topped Troup 63-6, with Troup’s only win coming on a forfeit.
Fayette then defeated Callaway 63-16, and Troup returned to its winning ways by knocking off county rival Callaway 54-24 in the last match of the night.
TROUP
Head coach Chris Mitchem wasn’t happy with his team’s effort against Fayette County in the night’s opening match.
The first-year head coach said the intensity level and effort just wasn’t there on a night where four varsity members were out with the flu and three others were unavailable due to injuries.
“I always want to see constant improvement,” Mitchem said. “Fayette County has got a great team and a great coach. We just didn’t come out aggressive. We didn’t come out and wrestle like Troup High School should. We didn’t shoot at all against Fayette County. That’s what really hurt us and we just weren’t aggressive.”
Mitchem said that aggressive attitude did shine through later when the Tigers took on rival Callaway.
Winners for Troup against Callaway included William Lundberg at 113 pounds, Preston Channell at 145 pounds, Jederrious Smith won on a pin at 145 pounds, and John Meacham won on a pin at 170 pounds.
Troup who will now head into the 16-team Yellow Jacket Duals at Rockmart on Saturday before returning home for another three-way meet next Wednesday when Heard County and Northside of Columbus come to town.
CALLAWAY
Coach Kurt Napier said it was a difficult night for his team, which only fielded wrestlers in 10 of the 14 weight classes, meaning the team gave up 24 points in forfeits alone.
“I guess you could say we had a tough night,” Napier said. “I was proud of a few of the older guys who stepped in there and won a few matches. We’re growing and getting better as a team every time we wrestle.”
Against Fayette County, Matthew Bucheger won on points in a 3-1 decision in the 152-pound weight class.
Sam Moseley won by pin in the 160-pound weight class, and Jonas Sanchez won by forfeit in the heavyweight class.
The Cavaliers wrestled competitively against Troup in the last meet of the night.
Perhaps one of the more interesting matches came in the heavyweight class, with Brandon Sutton of Callaway and Mitch Mathes of Troup facing off.
As with sports such as boxing and ultimate fighting, the heavyweight division seems to attract the most attention.
This match was no different as the pair squared off near the end of the night with Sutton winning on a pin after they dueled one another on foot before finally hitting the mat where Sutton took command.
“I do well when down on the mat,” Sutton said afterward. “Mitch (Mathes) is really good so we were pretty even while we were standing, but when we finally was down on the mat, that was about it and I took it.”
Other winners on the night for Callaway included Delvron Bledsoe at 195 pounds in a pin.
On the night, there were 14 matches forfeited on the night between the short-handed Troup and Callaway teams.
The Cavaliers are back in action again on Dec. 20 when they host the Callaway Duals that will include teams from LaGrange, Bowdon, Douglas County and potentially a couple of other teams that are considering participating, but haven’t been confirmed according to Napier.
