A three-car wreck at Vernon Street and Roanoke Road injured three people about 7:30 this morning after witnesses said an SUV ran a red light and struck two other vehicles.

Witnesses at the scene said that a red Ford Escape exited the parking lot of Piggly Wiggly on Roanoke Road at a high speed. The vehicle ran over a yield sign as it exited the parking lot, ripping off the wheel-well cover from the vehicle as it entered Roanoke Road.

Witnesses said the Escape was eastbound and pulled into the oncoming lane to pass two cars that were stopped at the red light at Vernon Street. The red SUV slammed into the front driver’s side of a southbound Toyota Camry that was turning right from Vernon Street onto Roanoke Road, before hitting a northbound Chevrolet Trailblazer that was waiting to turn left onto Roanoke Road.

“He hit (the Camry), bounced off and then hit (the Trailblazer) and went airborne,” said Rachel Folds, who was in one of the vehicles that the Escape passed before the wreck. “He flipped maybe three times. … He was going pretty fast, then – bang!”

Witnesses said the driver of the Trailblazer was pregnant, but only complained of shoulder pain from the seat belt. The driver of the Trailblazer and Camry were taken to West Georgia Medical Center for their injuries, officers said.

The driver of the Escape was taken from the scene by ambulance and expected to be flown to a regional hospital, an officer said. Witnesses said the driver seemed to be in poor condition.

The names of the drivers and their conditions were unavailable at press time. LaGrange police were investigating the wreck and expected to release more information and identities of the drivers later today.

The wreck cut off the busy intersection for more than two hours this morning. Police rerouted north and southbound traffic to Vernon Road as they investigated and cleared the wreckage.
