Callaway, Troup and Fayette County are participating in a tri-meet today, and the featured attraction will be a matchup of the two local teams.
Callaway stepped in as a replacement when another team dropped out.
“They had a school back out on them, and coach (Chris) Mitchem asked us,” Callaway head coach Kurt Napier said. “I told him sure.”
It gives Callaway some mat time during a week where there are no other matches scheduled.
Callaway participated in the Chattahoochee River Wrestling Association on Saturday, and Napier was pleased with what he saw.
The top highlight was provided by Delvron Bledsoe, who made it through to the championship match in his weight class before falling short.
Bledsoe came on strong at the close of last season, and he has continued the momentum into this season.
“He was second in the area (last season), so he finished last year strong,” Napier said. “I didn’t really know how this year would turn out for them.”
So far, so good for Bledsoe, and Saturday’s showing was one of his best as a Cavalier.
“I was really proud of him, and Brandon (Sutton),” Napier said.
Sutton, Callaway’s heavyweight, finished fourth after losing in overtime in a match that would have put him in the championship round.
“It was a loaded heavyweight class, but he still fared well,” Napier said. “He was seconds away from making it to the finals and having a chance to win the whole thing.”
Callaway had three other wrestlers, Clayton Vaught, Sam Moseley and Dustin Holmes place, and Napier said some of the young wrestlers also wrestled strong.
“I had a couple of freshmen that actually placed and medaled,” Napier said.
Troup, meanwhile, is coming off a fifth-place performance in a tournament over the weekend, with Adam Love leading the way with a 5-0 record.
“I was proud because we had a lot of varsity guys out and we still performed nicely,” Mitchem said. “I’m just glad we’re seeing constant improvement. Hopefully we’ll peak at the end of the season.”
Troup will participate in the Yellow Jacket Duals this weekend in Rockmart.
