Broad Street Apartments, home of the LaGrange College Servant Scholars Program, have been recognized by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation for Excellence in Rehabilitation.
The award recognizes projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value. This year, the Trust presented 12 Excellence in Rehabilitation awards.
Rebecca Roth, Senior Director of Development, traveled to Milledgeville on April 26 to accept the award on behalf of the college. She was accompanied by Kaye Minchew of the Troup County Historical Society, who nominated the project for the recognition.
“It was such an honor to represent the college and Callaway Foundation,” she said.
Built in 1936 for the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, the apartment building was designed by the renowned Atlanta architecture firm of Ivey and Crook. The structure was sold in the 1940s, but after the it fell into disrepair, the Callaway Foundation, Inc. repurchased the building in 2009 with the intention of rehabilitating it.
The work included adding handicap accessible features to create student apartment housing for the Servant Scholars. Upgrades were made to the building’s interior, and elevators were added to the rear in a way that did not detract from the building’s historic character.
After completion of the project, the apartments were given to the college. Students in these apartments now enjoy a prime location close to both downtown LaGrange and the campus. Begun in the fall of 2012, the Servant Scholars program brings selected students together to work with agencies in the community to identify needs and how to meet them.
Roth expressed her gratitude to the Callaway Foundation.
“We are deeply grateful to them for recognizing the importance of maintaining ties to the past while building for the future,” she said. “The gift of the Broad Street Apartments is a perfect example of their commitment to the growth and success of our community – not just the college, but also LaGrange, Troup County and the surrounding area.”
