Dozens of children and their parents spent the afternoon touching turtles and potting plants at the first Hillside Montessori Earth Day Celebration on Sunday.
The event, held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. included a variety of activities that were both fun and eco-friendly.
“Our favorite part was the turtles,” Beth McClannahan. Her 6-year-old daughter Ryleigh also enjoyed having a butterfly painted on her hand.
“We are super pleased with the turnout,” ecologist Melina Moyer said. Moyer is on the board for the Hillside Montessori and said the group could not have asked for better sponsors and weather.
The touch tank was sponsored by U.S. Fish and Wildlife in Warm Springs. Dash LaGrange and LaGrange College were among the event’s other sponsors.
“Part of our curriculum is about connecting with nature,” Bethany Headrick, Director of Hillside Montessori said. “Therefore, we encourage activities that respect and benefit the environment.”
Rain barrel painting, mural painting and looking at compost were among the most popular activities. Southern Music Entertainers provided live music throughout the celebration.
Food vendors included Big Sam’s Barbecue and Brusters, who donated proceeds to benefit the Hillside Montessori.
