The Georgia Department of Corrections’ Special Operations Tactical Squad joined Troup County Jail Detention Officers in a complete search of the Troup County jail Wednesday. The search for contraband came after former detention officer Angel Vargas, was arrested for smuggling drugs, phones and other items into the jail for money last month.
Four K-9 units from the Georgia DOC Special Operations Unit also assisted in the search, Public Information Officer Lt. Chad Mann said.
According to the sheriff’s office, items confiscated during the search included a piece of metal that was made into a weapon, a 10-inch screwdriver and a homemade tattoo gun. Police also found four cell phones, two cell phone chargers and an MP3 player.
“It is good to know that neither illegal drugs or tobacco products were detected,” Sheriff Donny Turner said.
Illegal drugs, weapons and other miscellaneous contraband, the sheriff said, are likely to be concealed above ceiling tiles, inside broken sinks and behind damaged walls.
