LaGrange College kicked off their “sneak preview” for this year’s 3D Journeys lecture series and travel program, “Rhythms of Brazil”.
The “Rhythms of Brazil” is the third in the college’s 3D Journeys lecture series that is being offered to members of the community. The 3D series is designed to have participants discover new and inspiring ideas, discuss and share thoughts with fellow students and develop new ways in seeing and thinking.
Judy Boggus, along with Ann Beason are the co-chairs of the 3D Journey committee. Boggus greeted people as they entered the Dickson assembly room of Turner Hall and explained what the day’s program was going to be.
“Today is going to be a coordinated snapshot of the four lectures and an introduction to the trip to Brazil,” said Boggus. She also said how excited the 3D Journey committee members are about the lecture series and the trip.
The program on Monday gave the attendees an opportunity to meet the four lecturers, hear a short introduction to their part of the series and receive information on the college’s scheduled trip to Brazil in early June, 2013. Individuals may take part in both the lecture series and the actual trip or they may just do either one. Before the actual program was started people were treated to cups of Brazilian coffee and were able to watch an entertaining and informative video on Brazil.
LaGrange College provost David Garrison gave a short introduction for each of the featured speakers for this year’s lecture series.
Each of the four speakers then gave a short introduction to their full lectures that are scheduled beginning in January 2013.
The college’s lecture series have been well received and are seen as offering a valuable connection to the community.
Danny Grady, a community member whose daughter graduated from LaGrange College, said, “these series are an opportunity for the college to interface with the community at large. A lot of people drive by the college everyday and this is an opportunity for them to be part of a small college experience in a college town.”
Alice Christenson, a retired nurse and a LaGrange resident sees the series as a means to broaden her experiences.
“I had attended three of the college’s lectures on Ireland last year. It’s just a chance to learn about the world, especially places that I haven’t been to,” said Christenson.
As the attendees left the hall, they were given a comprehensive guide to this year’s lecture series that included an additional reading list for each of the specific lectures.
The four lectures are scheduled to be given at 10 a.m., on the fourth Monday of January, February, March and April 2013. The following is a list of these lectures:
• January 28, Dr. Neila Holland, “Brazil Beyond Carnival and the Beaches”
•February 25, Dr. Lisa L. Crutchfield, “‘I Remain’: The Enduring Diversity of Brazil”
•March 25, Dr. Mark Yates, “Diversity and Ecology of the Amazon” •April 22, LaGrange College President Dan McAlexander, “Brazilian Inspired Music”.
The trip to Brazil is scheduled for June 1-10, 2013, and will include the cities of Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Iguassu.
Due to limited space, if you were not able to attend yesterday’s meeting and are interested in going on the trip to Brazil, you must call the college’s office of Alumni and Community Relations at 706-880-8245 to arrange to pick up a program brochure. Registration begins at 9 a.m., on Oct. 9, and is on a first come, first serve basis.
