Jane Stevens was named Woman of the Year at Thursday’s LaGrange Woman’s Club annual May meeting. New club officers for the 2013-2015 term were also installed during this meeting. The club’s meetings are always held at Bellevue.
The club’s current trustee, Martha Thom, commented on this special meeting.
“We have regular club meetings the second Thursday of every month, Sept. through May. May is always our special meeting where we invite our patrons and guests in town who we would like to honor,” Thom said. “We have 47 members and we hold fundraisers to help support this house and various community service projects.”
A buffet luncheon was provided by the club members and their guests before the regular program was started. Club President Mary Virginia Henderson spoke on some of Bellevue’s history during the meal.
“This house was built back in the middle of the 1800s, with a house of this age you can imagine the upkeep. There was a time when this house was vacant, no one lived here. Callaway Foundation acquired this house and then turned it over to the LaGrange Woman’s Club,” Henderson said. “There is no way we could do everything here without the continued support of Callaway Foundation.”
At Thursday’s meeting, as part of its community service projects, the LaGrange Woman’s Club made donations to the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and in honor of member Pat Gay, to the Troup-Harris Regional Library. Club President Mary Virginia Henderson presented LaGrange Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Dave Marler and Gay with the checks for the two organizations.
It was then time to name the club’s Woman of the Year Every year the honor of announcing the recipient of this award is given to the previous winner. Ethyl Ault announced the club’s 2013 Woman of the Year.
Ault said that the person who was selected this year always gives of her time generously. “She even comes back in the evening if she doesn’t have enough time to finish something,” Ault said. “I am going to walk over and stand by the person who was selected for this year’s Woman of the Year.”
Ault walked over and stood by Jane Stevens, which was met by Stevens’ surprise and applause from everyone else.
Past President, and longtime club member, Evelyn Jordan, then conducted the installation of the club officers who will provide the leadership for the club for the next two years.
“The ocean is filled with many wonders. Among these wonders, the beautiful homes that we call sea shells,” Jordan said. “There are lessons to be learned from our ocean friends. So today, I would like to present a gift from the sea to each of the officers…that will remind you of the office that you will hold.”
Jordan then proceeded to invite each of the new officers forward to light a candle and receive their “gift from the sea.” Jordan gave an explanation for each gift and then congratulated the newly installed officers.
