Droves of shoppers descended on downtown LaGrange Saturday for the Candlelight Holiday Shopping event.
The event was sponsored by the Downtown LaGrange Development Authority (DLDA) that brought shoppers and merchants together to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Troup County.
From 5-9 p.m. soft light glowed from various decorative sidewalk containers and store fronts were ablaze with holiday cheer. Fourteen different merchants were ready to receive shoppers with extended hours, tasty treats, special sales and service and all together, an opportunity to sample 16 different wines. All of the wines were then available to be purchased from the Downtown Package Store at discounted prices.
Barbie Watts, director of promotions and marketing at DLDA and Judy Solomon, who is also from DLDA, were stationed just inside Del’avant to greet shoppers and to facilitate registration for the evening. For a $20 donation, shoppers over the age of 21, were given a wristband, a commemorative wine glass and a brochure that listed the names of all of the stores that were open. The brochure also listed the particular wine, along with its description, that each store had available for tasting. Registration was also available at the various stores.
All of the participating stores had different appetizers and offered them in a festive setting. The Marketplace at Lafayette Square even offered main course selections including meats and vegetables. Shoppers were free to move between store to store to sample both food and drink as they worked through their holiday lists.
Linda Watkins and Victoria Paz took the opportunity to sample some of the many food choices that Marketplace had arranged on their front tables.
“We are enjoying the experience, this is the second time that we have attended this event. The stores are making it very interesting by the way they are decorated. You get ideas and you usually also find something,” Watkins said.
Along with their appetizers and beverages, the Ritzy Roost Consignment Marketplace even had live entertainment for their customers’ pleasure. While shoppers perused the many specials the shop had to offer, they were treated to Christmas tunes played by Christian Zubernis on his electric keyboard.
“All of the merchants did a great job in preparing for tonight and the Downtown Package Store was a tremendous help. This is a pleasant evening for shoppers and a great way to help support Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Troup County,” Watts said. ” We will be planning this event again for next year, but it will not be held on the first Saturday in December.”
