We need a national sales tax
First, let me say that I hate taxes. And I believe that a national sales tax is the best way to meet our responsibility to government. I do not believe we need a federal income tax and that a national sales tax should be charged to each and every person who buys a product, or service. Second, I do not believe that this country can continue to support the give away programs that we now have. We cannot pay for children because parents are not...

Performance was wonderful
I attended the Gardner Newman Middle School drama and chorus performance at Faith Baptist Church Friday evening. Even though I had two of my granddaughters performing, I was reluctant to go. Boy am I glad that my wife insisted that I was going! I was blown away by all the talent. Great singing, dancing, and acting. And the facilities were great as well. I just want to let the students know how much we enjoyed the entire performance. Their tea...

Hope that TSPLOST fails
Dear Editor, As a candidate for District 3 of the Troup County Board of Commissioners, I would like to inform your readers on how I view the upcoming TSPLOST referendum to be decided in the July 31 election. Even though I voted “yes” to last fall’s SPLOST and ESPLOST initiatives, I will be voting “no” to TSPLOST this summer. Let me tell you why. Last fall, Troup County voters were given the opportunity to vote on maintaining two one-c...

2012 elections bought and paid for by PACs of America
Dear editor: The superconservative PACs bulging with dollars of corporations and the super rich are targeting moderate but competent congressmen. Some have been taken out in the primaries, others have simply considered the fight too nasty and will not run. Heretofore modest campaign restrictions have prevented the outright sale of public office. No longer! I was pleased last October when Occupy captured the attention of the American peopl...

What is the plan for TSPLOST?
Dear Editor, I read with interest the article written by Sheri Kell, “Investing in the future,” Georgia’s crossroad decision. Some of the statements she wrote, I question. “Last year, officials in all 12 regions held multiple round table meetings to vet and determine the most urgent projects to be undertaken.” I was on the Three Rivers Planning commission last year (2011), and was never invited to or aware of any of these meetings. ...

Stop the barking dogs
Dear editor, Question: Just what does the so called city animal control people do for their paycheck, other than make excuses, say “we can’t do that” mumble, grumble, muttering and not making much sense or trying to shove the complaint off on someone else. I’ve called three times about my new neighbor’s lab dog barking hours on end 35 feet from my bedroom window (I’m a third-shift worker). I’ve tried talking to the neighbor to no resu...

T-SPLOST: Much more than just a tax
I am pleased to see that Commissioner Buck Davis has voiced his opposition to the T-SPLOST sales tax measure that will be on the July ballot. His concern regarding local control of local tax revenues is valid. However, the T-SPLOST issue is also an opportunity to ask some bigger questions about the general direction of government. If passed, the T-SPLOST measure will put billions of added tax dollars into the control of regionalized governm...

Everyone deserves a second chance
I am not understanding the whole business aspect of some companies in this area, they claim they want to help put people back to work, while at the same time, they make it almost impossible to get hired. I have a very extensive work background, and a very impressive resume, but because of a one small issue on my background report from three years ago, I have been denied jobs, and even interviews stating “because of a criminal history,” note...

Lake, or drainage ditch?
In this weeks article, “West Point Lake being operated in Drought Conditions,” Dick Timmerberg, director of the West Point Lake Coalition said, “That it is important to note that the morning of March 5, our lake level was 634.5 (mean sea level), only a half foot short of ‘full.’ Unfortunately, the Mobile district decided to repeat last year’s mistake and release this water under the guise of flood control.” Mr. Timmerberg makes an important...

You must participate
Dear Editor, On the local political scene, I’m basically a nobody. I’m not popular. I’m not well-connected. And I don’t have much money. However, when I ran for LaGrange City Council last year against an incumbent who’s been in office since 1995, I won nearly a quarter of the vote, even though I ran a non-traditional campaign on a shoestring budget. I didn’t accept any monetary contributions, and I didn’t spend hundreds or thousands of do...

Be informed of TSPLOST
Dear Editor: I agree everyone should have the information needed so as to make an informed decision about the Transportation 1 percent sales tax. In 2010, a study was commissioned by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and completed by U.S. Travel Association in Washington, D.C. This study reflects the down turn in the Economy and explains some of why the State of Georgia is cutting back on their spending. The Economy has pic...

Put some pro sports coverage in the paper
Dear Sports Editor, I have taken the Daily news for about 40 years and I have never seen it so bad. You never have the standings for Pro Sports. We finally have the Hawks playing good and playing for a spot in the Playoffs. The Braves are playing good and one day this week both teams won and you had nothing at all about them. All you know how to print is local sports. Why is this hapening? Hope you can see fit to print more about our pro tea...

I wish my vote counted
Dear Editor, Sir they say go vote and be a good citizen, however I vote in every election and my vote never counts, because I am a Democrat. I am probably hated by the Tea Party, and the Republicans, who I think are for the rich. Well I sure wish my vote counted in this Republican state. This makes you wish you had a right to vote on your own, and not some electoral college voted for you. In my opinion the rich are getting richer and the poor...

Troup County Republican party is hopping
Dear Editor I attended the Troup County Republican Party meeting last week that was held at the Memorial Library. Not only was the itinerary excellent, but there was also an excellent turnout for the event. We heard from Sheriff Donny Turner as well as sheriff candidate Danny Harrington. Both men were extremely interesting. I was very impressed with the number of citizens who were there as well. I took a head count and there were 67 p...

Bonuses should be earned
Dear Editor- I always thought that bonuses were earned for hard work and favorable results. CEO Pandit of CitiCorp who saw his share price drop 45%is now expecting a bonus of $15 million. In 1986 all the bonuses awarded on Wall St. amounted to $2.2 Billion. Now at a time when mistakes have been made and prices of shares have plunged, they pay $19.7 billion in bonuses. But perhaps these questionable practices and poor results are finally bei...

Protest child abuse instead
I’ll refrain from posing a rebuttal to Scott Smith’s letter to the editor regarding the “Occupy Movement.” On April 14th per Mr. Smith, there was a training session on nonviolent direct action that was attended by “several citizens.” These attendees included students, educators, workers, unemployed people, counselors (who deal with the fallout of economic injustice on a daily basis) and seniors who expected to be retired by now.” I’d like...
