TYRONE – The Troup Tigers beat the rain, and the Sandy Creek Patriots on Thursday in a Region 5-AAAA soccer showdown.

While many sporting events in this part of the state were postponed because of rain on Thursday, the soccer teams from Troup and Sandy Creek were able to play.

First up was the girls’ game, and Sandy Creek scored two first-half goals on the way to a 2-0 victory.

Because there were a pair of weather delays during the girls’ game, the boys’ game started about an hour late, but the Tigers and Patriots were able to play the whole game.

Troup got a pair of goals in the first half to build the lead, and it went on to capture a 2-0 win to even its region record at 1-1.

It was an important win for Troup, which lost its region opener to Carrollton.

With Thursday’s win, the Tigers will head into their final three region games in position to snare one of the region’s four state-playoff bids.

“It was a very physical game,” Troup head coach Jase Crenshaw said. “I think both of us knew what we were playing for.”

Troup’s first goal game with about 15 minutes left in the first half.

Carson Wreyford took a free kick from about midfield, and Alan Vazquez headed the ball into the goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Later in the half, Hunter Morgan scored on an unassisted goal to put the Tigers up 2-0.

“We had a few more opportunities,” Crenshaw said. “Thomas Trotter hit the frame of the goal a couple of different times. Thankfully, we held the shutout, and two was all we needed, and we’re thankful for those two.”

The Tigers began the season with four straight wins, and they improved to 5-1-1 with a 4-1 win over LaGrange.

Troup followed that up with back-to-back losses to Hardaway and Carrollton, and it had to rally in the second half to beat Spencer 3-2 last week.

Crenshaw felt like Thursday’s performance was reminiscent of what the team was doing earlier in the season.

“They held it together pretty well,” Crenshaw said. “They played nice, consistent ball. It looked like the team we started the season with, so it was nice. The last few matches, I thought we’ve been lacking something, but they played some nice soccer tonight.”

Troup’s teams are off until April 4 when they visit region foe Woodward Academy.

Callaway’s soccer teams were supposed to play at Cedartown on Thursday, but those games were rained out.

Callaway played at Pepperell on Tuesday, and while the Lady Cavaliers won 6-1, the Cavaliers fell short 2-1.

The Lady Cavaliers improved to 4-2 in Region 5-AAA play, while the Cavaliers are now 2-3 in the region.

Callaway’s teams will be back on the field on April 8 to host Brookstone.

TENNIS: LaGrange’s teams stepped out of region play to face Carrollton on Wednesday.

In the girls’ match, the Lady Trojans won 4-1, while the unbeaten Trojans claimed a 5-0 win.
