HOGANSVILLE – The local colleges were well-represented at Callaway High’s volleyball camp this week.
Among the instructors for the two-day camp was LaGrange College head coach Jamie Thomas, as well as a pair of players on the Point University volleyball team.
Callaway head coach Heather Smith, the camp director, was glad to have the help, and she enjoyed seeing how other people go about teaching the game.
“It’s a learning opportunity for me, just as it is for (the campers),” said Smith, who is heading into her first season as Callaway’s head coach. “It’s good to have a different coach’s perspective.”
Smith said about 20 players from her team participated in the camp, and there were also players from LaGrange High and Lafayette Christian School, as well as three home-schooled students.
“The first day, we did mostly passing and setting,” Smith said toward the tail end of Wednesday’s second and final camp session. “The second day, we did more of the blocking and hitting, and now this is the free play where they’re tying it all together.”
Smith said she likes having instructors from the colleges helping out, especially since some of her players have expressed an interest in playing college volleyball.
“We have a number of girls who have said they would like to play at the next level,” Smith said. “For them to have those college players come in and instruct and help them with their skills is helpful.”
It’s the second local camp Smith’s players have been involved with this summer.
In June, Callaway’s players went to LaGrange High for a camp.
In addition to the camps, many of Callaway’s players have come to the school a few times a week this summer to work out.
“We have been doing open gym,” Smith said. “We’ve been doing that two days a week, for two hours a day. We’ll do that up until tryouts, which are the first week in August.”
Official practice begins in a little more than two weeks, and the season gets started soon after that.
“We’re ready for the grind,” Smith said.
