TEMPLE – They’re headed to state.

The Callaway Lady Cavaliers went 2-1 in the Area 5-AA volleyball tournament on Saturday to qualify for the state tournament that begins next week.

Callaway will be one of 16 Class AA teams competing in the state tournament, and it will be on the road for the first round.

Callaway’s biggest win on Saturday came in its opening match.

Needing a win over Lamar County to advance to the semifinals and keep its season alive, Callaway made it happen.

Callaway then played third-seeded Jordan, and it lost a hard-fought match in four sets.

In the day’s final match, Callaway beat Spencer to secure the area’s number three seed.

“It was a long, good day of volleyball,” Callaway coach Heather Smith said. “We are very excited.”

Callaway became the second local volleyball team to qualify for the state tournament.

Last week, Troup finished third in the Area 5-AAAA tournament, and it will be on the road this week for its first-round state game.
