They went down fighting.
The Callaway Lady Cavaliers lost both games of a doubleheader against Morgan County on Wednesday in the opening round of the Class AAA state softball tournament.
The Lady Cavaliers rallied in the final inning of both games, but they were unable to complete the comeback either time.
In the first game, Callaway scored four runs in the seventh inning, but Morgan County held on for a 7-6 win.
In the second game, Callaway plated three runs in its last at-bat, but it was Morgan County securing the 8-4 victory to clinch the series and advance to the second round of the state tournament.
“They’re just a solid ballclub that makes plays,” Callaway coach Ashley Summerlin said of Morgan County. “They made one error today, and we made a lot. We hung right there with them. We just didn’t make the plays, and they did. In the playoffs, when you play good teams, you give them extra outs, they take advantage of it, and they did.”
Still, as has been the case so often this season, Callaway made things interesting and kept fighting until the end, even when things looked bleak.
“That’s a testament to not giving up, and competing to the last out,” Summerlin said. “We did that this year.”
In the first game, Callaway trailed 7-2 when senior Keshonna Terrell hit a three-run home run, cutting the deficit to two.
Jessica Perkins then singled and came around to score to make it a one-run game, and that’s where the comeback ended.
In the second game, it was Terrell coming through with the big hit once again.
With the bases loaded, Terrell had a triple to drive in three runs, but the Lady Cavaliers weren’t able to score again.
Also on Wednesday, the season ended for LaGrange and Troup in the first round of the state playoffs.
LaGrange was in Stockbridge for a Class AAAAA series, and it had its hands full with a strong Woodland team.
LaGrange dropped the first game 8-0, and it fell 13-0 in the second game.
Troup was at North Hall for a Class AAAA playoff series.
Troup lost the first game 6-2, and its season ended with a 7-1 loss in the second game.
In the first game, Maddie Weathers was 2-for-3 with a double, and Hanna Lane, Amber Arnold, Kayla Lane, Madison McCartney, Olivia Jones and Abby Taylor each had a hit, and McCartney had an RBI.
In the second game, Arnold was 2-for-3, and Weathers had a double and an RBI.
Hanna Lane pitched the first game, and Taylor was the pitcher in the second game.
