LAGRANGE – The Callaway High sports teams will have a new classification to try to conquer, while LaGrange and Troup could be set to share the same region.

On Wednesday, the Georgia High School Association released the classification assignments for all of the schools in the state.

There has been a lot of reshuffling since a seventh classification, up from the previous six, is being added for the 2016-2017 school year.

Callaway, which has been in Class AAA for the past several years, is dropping down to Class AA.

LaGrange and Troup, meanwhile, have both been slotted in Class AAAA.

That wouldn’t be a change for Troup since it is already in Class AAAA, while LaGrange would drop down from Class AAAAA.

LaGrange was originally placed in Class AAAA during the most recent reclassification process, but it decided to play up a classification.

If LaGrange and Troup both remain in Class AAAA, they’ll share the same region, and there are a number of other schools in the area that would likely be in the region with them.

Among the teams that would probably be in the region with LaGrange and Troup are Hardaway, Columbus, Shaw, Carver-Columbus and Central-Carroll.

Other candidates are Upson-Lee, Woodard Academy, Spalding County, Sandy Creek and Pike County.

Callaway could end up sharing a region with Heard County, Spencer, Jordan and Temple.

Outside of those schools, other possible region-mates for Callaway are Rome-area schools Pepperell, Coosa and Armuchee.

Callaway has been in the same region with Pepperell for the past two school years.

Schools that want to move up a classification must notify the GHSA of their desire to do that by Nov. 30.

On Dec. 1, the GHSA will reveal the region assignments for all of the state’s teams.

On Dec. 8, the reclassification committee will hear appeals from schools looking to move to a different region, and then on Jan. 13, the full GHSA executive committee will vote on the final region assignments, and the process will be complete.
