LAGRANGE – Different sport, same result.

Last week, the Lafayette Christian School football team beat Central Christian to win the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association state championship.

On Tuesday, teams from those same two schools were squaring off once again, but this time the setting was a gymnasium.

In its season opener, Lafayette Christian School’s boys’ basketball team used a furious fourth-quarter rally to beat Central Christian 59-45.

The Cougars trailed through three periods, but they outscored the Crusaders 26-5 in the final quarter to get the season-opening win.

Jemi Reed, one of the stars for the football team in last week’s win, began his second season as a Lafayette Christian School basketball player in style.

The senior scored 21 points, and he also had five steals and six rebounds.

Ross Clifton added 14 points, and Marcus Mobley contributed 11 points.

Antaveis Sands, a running back who scored two touchdowns in the championship game, spurred the Cougars’ defensive effort with nine steals.

After taking a 15-6 lead after the first quarter, the Cougars were outscored 21-9 in the second period and they were down by two points at the half.

The Cougars were outscored 13-8 in the third period to fall behind by seven, but they stormed back in the final quarter.
