Cavaliers ready to bounce back after close loss

HOGANSVILLE – They’ve moved on.
The Callaway Cavaliers were on the brink of pulling off a big road win over the unbeaten LaGrange Grangers on Tuesday, but it didn’t happen.
The Cavaliers had the lead with less than a minute remaining, but it was the Grangers finding a way to get the 63-60 home win to improve to 7-0.
It was the second time in four days the Cavaliers lost to the Grangers, and as disappointing as those losses were, it’s still very early in the season.
Callaway (2-2) has only played four games, and it won’t begin the all-important Region 5-AAA schedule until January.
Still, that knowledge didn’t make the losses to LaGrange any easier to take.
“You want to win (every game), and we played hard,” Callaway head coach Terry Hayes said. “All we can do is get ready for Harris County.”
Callaway will host Harris County today in the first of two home games in two days.
On Saturday, Callaway will face another county rival in the Troup Tigers.
Harris County is 2-4, and it has dropped four of five games since a season-opening win.
Troup, meanwhile, is 4-2, and it has won four of five games after losing its season opener to Newnan.
While the Cavaliers are looking to bounce back from a tough loss, the Lady Cavaliers are hoping to keep the momentum going after a dramatic come-from-behind victory over LaGrange.
After losing their first three games of the season, the Lady Cavaliers found themselves in a 15-point hole at the half of Tuesday’s game.
Callaway (1-3) stormed back in the second half to beat LaGrange 47-42.
“I felt like we had a good game plan, and I felt like we executed,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said.
Martin has made conditioning a critical part of the practice plan, and he felt that paid dividends against LaGrange.
“I think they ran out of gas, and we didn’t,” Martin said.
If Callaway beats Harris County today and Troup on Saturday, it will get its record to .500.
Harris County comes into today’s game with a 5-2 record, and it has won three in a row since losing two straight games.
Troup, which handed Harris County one of those losses, is 3-3 after last week’s losses to LaGrange and Heard County.
