LAGRANGE – Their unbeaten season was on the line.

The Lafayette Christian School Cougars trailed by six points heading into the fourth quarter of Friday’s game at Heirway Christian, and they were in danger of losing their first game.

By the time the Cougars boarded the team bus for the trip back to LaGrange, though, their perfect record was still intact.

Lafayette Christian rallied for an 82-79 overtime victory to improve to 10-0 overall, and 7-0 in the region.

The Cougars will try to make it 11 in a row when they host Hearts Academy in a region game today, and those same two teams will meet on Thursday in Powder Springs.

The Cougars have six regular-season games remaining before the region tournament that will be held at Lafayette Christian beginning on Feb. 4.

Lafayette Christian will then turn its attention to the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association state tournament that starts on Feb. 8.

Lafayette Christian’s two closest games this season have been against Heirway, with both games going to overtime.

In the first game, Lafayette Christian secured a 69-66 home win.

In the rematch, senior guard Jemi Reed scored 16 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Cougars get the big road win.

In overtime, the Cougars were trailing by a point when Reed hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give his team a five-point lead.

The Cougars led the rest of the way.

Senior post player Marcus Mobley scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds, and senior Antaveis Sands had 13 points, four steals, and five rebounds.

Lafayette Christian assistant coach Rene Gomez said a handful of other players were also instrumental in the overtime victory, including Josh Shepherd, who scored five points and had four rebounds.

“When he was in there he played pretty big,” Gomez said. “He’s kind of our enforcer down low.”

Gomez said that Ross Clifton also provided a lift with seven points and two steals.

“Those were seven points that weren’t quiet,” Gomez said. “He had a big three to end the second quarter, and he had a big three in the fourth quarter.”

Gomez also said that Clay Kelley helped turn things around in the second quarter when he took a charge that helped the Cougars rally from a six-point deficit.
