Dear Editor:

The city of LaGrange has lost a great person and leader. I am speaking of former Chief Gary Shepherd. I had the pleasure and honor of working for Chief Shepherd for 11 years before his illness cut his career short.

There are so many good memories of Chief Shepherd, and these memories will always remain with me.

One event that really meant a lot to me was Chief Shepherd’s first retirement ceremony, which was held at Callaway Auditorium. I was chosen by the family to drive the limousine with Chief Shepherd and his family. Anyone else could have been chosen, but I was honored to drive Chief Shepherd and the family.

For all of the officers who worked for Chief Shepherd, we were honored. For the officers that never did, they missed out.

Those years were the best years of my career at the LaGrange Police Department. You will be missed by many.
