The Lafayette Christian School Cougars survived a shootout with Life Christian Academy in Albany Friday night to improve to 3-0 for the first time in school history.

The Cougars charged out to a 2-0 lead, but that lead was down to 40-36 in the second half before they pulled away for a 54-42 win.

Quarterback Matt Brown had a big game with six total touchdowns, five on the ground and one through the air.

Brown’s 29-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 54-36 and put the game away.

Josh Vaughn added a rushing touchdown, and Jeff Hutcheson had a 10-yard scoring catch.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” Lafayette Christian head coach Nick Nehring said. “We’ve had times where we’ve had games like this and it slipped away from us. We were thin on numbers, we were missing a couple of guys, but the guys just played hard.”

Nehring said senior Stephen Ninas came through with a key sack late in the game that helped preserve the win.

The Cougars will try to make it four in a row when they host Heritage Christian (Ala.) Friday.
