Two Troup County women were injured in a collision that left a West Point man dead Monday.

Virginia Ann Helton of Sweetwater Drive and Nancy Davis of Woodstream Trail were eastbound in a Toyota Rav 4 on Ga. 18 four miles west of its intersection with Whitesville Road when they struck a Mitsubishi Galant that had crossed the center line.

James “Jay” Morrison III, 30, of Avenue C was the driver and only person in the Galant, which was westbound about 9:15 a.m. Monday when it went off the road, causing Morrison to try and jerk the wheel twice to gain control, said Sgt. Maurice Raines of the Georgia State Patrol.

Helton’s vehicle struck the rear passenger side of Morrison’s vehicle, causing it to overturn and land on its roof.

Morrison, son of former West Point City Councilman Jamie Morrison, was pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m.

Helton was taken to a Columbus hospital by helicopter and Davis was taken there by ambulance. Neither suffered life-threatening injuries, Raines said. Condition reports for the women were unavailable Tuesday morning.
