LaGrange Fire Department lieutenant found dead

A lieutenant with the city of LaGrange Fire Department committed suicide Wednesday afternoon at the fire department maintenance facility at 1210 Hogansville Road.

Lt. Carl Steven Porter, 59, of 1515 Hogansville Road, was found outside the building where he works just before 1 p.m. He died of an apparent self-inflicted wound, according to police.

“He was fatally injured a short time before someone responded,” said Lou Dekmar, chief of public safety for the city of LaGrange.

“This is a tragic loss for our agency,” Dekmar said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Porter has three grown daughters.

He had worked for the fire department for more than 27 years.

No further information was available at press time.

Very sad to see and hear of this. My grandfather's second attempt was successful yet my cousin's and aunt's did it on the first try. All were crying for help but apparently nobody listened. Some cry silently as perhaps Lt. Porter did and I do not blame anyone anymore than I blame my father or other family members. Still, the article was cold. The late Mike Wallace suffered from depression and is noted in saying "Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem." By the way, I was in my late twenties when I was informed that my grandfather did not die of a heart attack.

Your story of bus woes and what the paper prints/doesn’t print is a petty comment to make in this situation. An employee of the city that took his life at a city facility is a story that’s worthy of being reported. This story should come with more information about suicide and the help that is available to anyone who is having thoughts of suicide or self harm. We shouldn’t let this be a passing story that turns into people debating the worthiness of a news report but into an opportunity to show people who are in trouble that they can get help. Can't we raise prevention awareness and have respect for his family? You don't see other respectable news sources using wording like this here. His family are the ones left dealing with the pain, it would be nice if they had help.

Yes he was a well known person but, you could've refrained from posting this like you have. I am very close to the family and you should have more respect for them during this time. Let a family grieve instead of blasting this information all over the news.

I feel for this family. This paper did the same to my wife's family when her brother passed away after 20 years of service to the city. But at the same time the paper does not print things that makes the city or county look bad. Just like the time a bus driver backed a bus loaded with kids over my daughters car, and kids jumped out of the bus and were running everywhere. Most walked home.
