In January, LaGrange College’s Juniors and Seniors will again have an opportunity to expand their cultural and specific field experiences by taking advantage of the college’s “Jan Term”.

Debby Baker, LaGrange College’s news and feature writer explained that the Interim, or “Jan Term,” is in the middle of LaGrange College’s academic calendar, between fall and spring semesters.

“Interim courses are designed to encourage students to explore course content either in or outside of their majors through personal, hands-on experience,” Baker said.

Jan Term classes include on-campus projects, independent research, internships and study-travel experiences. The study-travel, or “Study-Away” program, is extremely popular with the juniors and seniors, and this year’s locations promise to be memorable, and valuable adventures for all.

Course offerings and destinations for January 2013 include both international and domestic travel opportunities.

Internationally, there are two courses taking place in France, three courses scheduled to take place in Great Britain, a nursing course in London, and one course to be offered in El Salvador.

Three domestic travel opportunities will also be offered to LaGrange College Juniors and Seniors. Students may travel to Hawaii to take a course on ecology and Hawaiian culture, the Civil War will be examined by exploring historical sites, and Playwright Tennessee Williams will be studied through the exploration of the Mississippi Delta and New Orleans.

Administrators and professors recognize the importance of the off-campus travel opportunities and are committed to the further enhancement of the program. This is the second year that LaGrange College is establishing funds for this “Study-Away” program. Each freshman will have a $2,500 voucher put aside for their junior or senior year January travel experience.

Since January 2014 will be the first time when some students will actually be eligible to take advantage of these vouchers, scholarships for students who are not part of the voucher program will be available for January 2013 travel programs. These scholarships are typically awarded to students based on a student’s previous study-travel experience, class year, grade point average and demonstrated financial need.

Once the college students have registered for these programs and there are still vacant slots, these travel and course opportunities are then open to the public.

For more information, email or phone (800) 593-2885 and ask for a copy of the college’s “Study Away” passport brochure. You may also access additional information at https://www.lagrange.edu/academics/janterm.html.
