A Troup County detention officer faces charges of bringing weapons and drugs into the Troup County Jail.

Sheriff’s officials said John Ethan Frost, 34, who had worked at the jail since August 2008, was handcuffed about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 28 after jail personnel reported that he was “displaying suspicious behavior.” Deputies searched him and found a knife, gun magazine with six live rounds for a .380 pistol, a glass smoking device covered in residue and some synthetic marijuana.

In a bag, Frost had a .380 handgun, parts to other firearms and pills later identified as the attention-deficit, hyperactive disorder medication Adderall, a schedule II controlled substance. In his vehicle, deputies said they also found four firearms and more ammunition in the trunk of his vehicle.

Frost was charged with crossing the guard line of the jail with weapons and a controlled substance. He was taken to Heard County Jail and released on a $30,000 bail the next day.

Frost was fired from the jail and the incident is still under investigation, sheriff’s officials said.
