Facing the Central-Carroll Lions in a matchup of teams with unbeaten Region 4-AAA records, the Cavaliers rallied from a 10-7 deficit to win 14-10.
The Cavaliers (5-1), in winning their fifth straight game, improved to 3-0 in the region and are alone in first place.
Central was driving for a potential winning score late when Wilson Lindsey came up with a huge interception with 1:41 left in the game.
Before Central’s last-gap drive, Callaway took the ball from its own 32 yard line with 9:45 left in the game and drove 68 yards for a score.
Quarterback Tez Parks scored from a yard out to give the Cavaliers the lead, and Chase Freeman made the extra point to make it a 14-10 game.
Central received the opening kickoff and scored first on a 1-yard touchdown run, a play that was set up by a long bomb.
Still trailing 7-0 going into the second quarter, defensive back Terry Godwin picked off a pass at his own 35-yard line and returned it 65 yards to paydirt and tied the game at 7-7 after the extra point.
The score stayed that way until the 7:01 mark in the third quarter when Central booted a field goal good from 28 yards and a 10-7 lead.
Callaway struggled to get anything going before the winning drive.
The Cavaliers did all of their damage on the game-winning drive on the ground.
Afterward, Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said his players “found a way to win.”
Callaway will face region foe Haralson County at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Callaway Stadium.
