The Cavaliers thumped the Haralson County Rebels 40-7 Friday night to remain perfect against Region 4-AAA competition.
The Cavaliers (6-1 overall), who have won six straight games since a season-opening loss to Heard County, moved to 4-0 in the region with three regular-season games remaining.
Eddie Culpepper had two touchdown runs and returned an interception for a score, and Tez Parks, Wilson Lindsey and Devon Rosser added touchdown runs for the Cavaliers.
Defensively, Callaway shut down Haralson’s option offense.
The Rebels didn’t score until the game’s final minute when the Callaway reserves were in the game.
Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said the players did a terrific job of handling the homecoming activities.
“It was a great week for us with homecoming and all the festivities going on,” Wiggins said. “I was real proud of our kids for staying focused. We have a lot of stuff going on at the school every day as far as our student body. We stressed, don’t get caught up in that. Have fun with it, but stay focused on the Friday night. And I felt like we did that.”
The Cavaliers led 28-0 at the half, and they added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to put it away.
Haralson got a 14-yard touchdown run from Nii-okai Reindorf with 43 seconds left to avoid the shutout.
Rosser, who had a 1-yard scoring run, said the Cavaliers had everything working, although he wasn’t happy about getting caught from behind on one third-quarter play.
Rosser had a long run to the Haralson County 7-yard line to set up a Lindsey scoring run.
“I’m real satisfied, except getting caught down there by the five,” a grinning Rosser said. “But as far as the team goes, I was real satisfied. We couldn’t have done any better.”
The Cavaliers took control from the start, going 64 yards in six plays for a touchdown on their opening drive.
Parks capped the drive with an 8-yard scoring run, and the Cavaliers led 6-0 after the extra-point attempt was blocked.
After an interception by Pedy Leverette, Callaway quickly scored again.
Lindsey had a 40-yard run to the 1-yard line, and Rosser finished things off with a short scoring run.
Parks then completed a two-point conversion pass to Terry Godwin, and Callaway was up 14-0 with 6:46 left in the first quarter.
It got worse for the Rebels moments later.
After Reindorf gave the Rebels a spark with a 26-yard run into Callaway territory, Culpepper picked off a pass and returned it 55 yards for the touchdown, and Chase Freeman’s extra point made it a 21-0 game with 4:10 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Cavaliers capped the first-half scoring with a 65-yard scoring drive in the second quarter.
Parks had a 30-yard run on the drive, and he also completed a 36-yard pass to Terry Godwin on third down.
Culpepper finished things off with a 5-yard touchdown run, and the Cavaliers took a 27-0 lead at the half.
Callaway added a couple of touchdowns in the third quarter to put it away.
After Rosser’s long run set the Cavaliers up at the 7, Lindsey’s touchdown scamper gave Callaway a 33-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, after a Fayette County fourth-down play failed, Culpepper went about 70 yards for the touchdown, and Freeman’s extra point was true to push the lead to 40-0 with 38 seconds left in the quarter.
Things moved quickly in the fourth quarter because of the running clock, and the Rebels put together a nice drive late to put some points on the board.
“It was a great (homecoming) parade in Hogansville leading up to this, and it was a big crowd tonight,” Wiggins said. “I was just real proud that we came out and represented Callaway football.”
