ATLANTA – Callaway’s football team ran into no surprises at Lakewood Stadium Saturday afternoon and easily dispatched of B.E.S.T. Academy 35-6.

The Cavaliers moved to 7-1 on the season, winning their seventh in a row after their opening-night loss to Heard County on Aug. 25.

The win also gives the Cavaliers an unblemished 5-0 record in Region 4-AAA heading into Thursday’s home game against Douglass.

Callaway led 35-0 at the half, and there was a running clock in the second half as Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins allowed his reserve players to get some game experience.

Callaway was playing in an unusual time on Saturday afternoon, but Wiggins said everyone handled it well.

“I was proud of the way our kids handled it,” Wiggins said. “We came out and executed well early. There’s things we can do better, but overall I was proud of our kids’ effort.”

The outcome of this one was never in doubt.

Cavalier running back Eddie Culpepper rambled 66 yards on the first play of the game for a touchdown with just 22 second elapsed, and Chase Freeman’s extra point kick made it 7-0.

Callaway’s next score came when Terry Godwin took a handoff on a reverse and ran 31 yards to paydirt, and Freeman’s extra point made it 14-0 with 7:45 to go in the first quarter.

Lebronze Zelaya then went over for a 3-yard score with 1:57 left in the opening period, and it was 21-0 heading into the second quarter.

Callaway’s next score was set up by a 37-yard run by quarterback Tez Parks, who was stopped just short of the goal line. Culpepper scored on a 3-yard run with 6:53 remaining in the half to make it 28-0.

Callaway’s final score came with 25 seconds left in the first half when Wilson Lindsey took a Parks handoff at the 2-yard line and scored.

Freeman again added the point after, giving the Cavaliers a 35-0 lead.

B.E.S.T. didn’t manage to pick up a first down in the game until 4:59 remaining in the half, and it didn’t cross midfield until the second half.

B.E.ST.’s lone score came with 11:49 in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard plunge. .

After Callaway’s game on Thursday against region foe Douglass, the Cavaliers will close the regular season at home Nov. 9 against another region opponent, Rockmart, before heading into the playoffs.
