Don’t make empty promises

Dear Editor,

Once again, I read with dismay the whining of those who screech loudly that they have the answers — or rather “promises”— to reduce school property taxes for all, eliminate school property taxes for those 65 and still maintain (and even improve) all classes, all subject matter, all athletics and even build more school facilities.

They “promise” to keep art and language classes. They “promise” to roll back and eliminate school taxes. They “promise” to make school lunches more palatable. They promise to give us our cake and let us eat it, too. Those making these completely unrealistic promises have never sat on a school board. I have.

In fact, the school system I helped guide back to sound financial footing was in terrible shape when I took office. The Board of Education was actually requesting that parents send rolls of toilet paper to school because the system could not afford to buy any. So I know, first hand, what it means for a school board to have its back against the wall and to be assailed on all fronts.

The first thing you have to do is start making the hard choices nobody wants to make. Which facilities have to be shut down? Which classes can be eliminated? Which staff can be terminated? And you have to do all that according to federal guidelines, state guidelines, and the teacher’s union rules. Simultaneously, you have to start digging very deep for additional revenues, which often means raising taxes. Not because you are spendthrifts, but because there is literally nowhere else to go for the money necessary to keep the schools open. When you cut away all the waste (assuming there actually is waste available to cut, which is rarely the case), and once you shut down everything you can and end all the classes you can and eliminate all the staff you can and there are no other funds from the state or federal government, then you have to raise taxes. Either that, or you have to shut the school system down for lack of funding.

It is easy to “promise” to create an educational nirvana. It is impossible to implement it. However, if all the whiners out there truly do know how, it is their civic responsibility and moral obligation to provide the citizens of Troup County with all the details of their plan, so we can take it to the BOE and work with them to implement it. In other words, it is time to put-up or shut-up. If you have a detailed, actionable plan then give it to us. If all you have are pie-in-the-sky promises then please stop attacking our local board of education while they do their best to educate our children without the funding and infrastructure so vital to a vibrant, dynamic and successful school system.

Do not wait another four years while you plan another campaign for election to the BOE, hoping that “promises” rather than plans can actually gain you a seat. Give us the plan. Give us the details. Give us the action agenda that can be immediately implemented. Or stop whining and let the adults in the room do their jobs.

Put up or shut up is eaxctly what should be asked of the TCBOE. The cuts in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 only impacts the education of our children. About 4 years ago my company went through a fat trimming measure at our corporate office and basically went through every position asking some key questions. One being, How much of your work time a day is spent on your job function? If everyone was honest and which they where there was too much time being lost and some job functions where duplicated. Why has the 2 cuts only impacted the school's and none of them are at the central office? You can't tell me that everyone there spends 100% of their time on their job function. Could positions be combined? Is there nice to haves that could be let go? Example would be the need of a PR department. How exactly is a full time PR person needed for TCBOE? I am sure we have multiple request a day for information. Last I knew everyone on the school board are well educated. Wouldn't take much to type up a response to the random question from the public or media. I do agree that if your going to complain to present a plan rather than making noise by the folks who lost the election. I however am a parent of 2 students in the school system who is impacted by this. I have no knowledge of the in's and out's of the school budget but my past experience shows in the business sector usually there are areas that can be trimmed, it might require more work of someone else but if it means a better more well rounded education for the children than so be it. Nice to haves are good, I enjoy them at my job, but I would not sacrfice a customer facing postion (teachers) for a nice to have.

Point well taken. However, Mr. Phillips you are preaching to the choir. The "plan" of these whiners is to try and disrupt what the adults in the room are trying to accomplish. Is the BOE perfect? NO, far from it. But I'd rather keep the members we have, than turn it over to a bunch that is hell bent on making themselves look and feel good in their eyes. I've known Dariel, or Wayne, when we were growing up, is only concerned with building his ego. Remember the "hope and change" promised 4 years ago and see the mess we're in now? I've known most of these members for a long time and they are some of the most dedicated and caring people I know. Who would put up with the garbage they listen to and read what is written about them and just let it go? I darn sure wouldn't and they shouldn't have to either. To the whiners "EITHER PUT UP OR SHUT THE HELL UP" You act like a bunch of spoiled brats, always trying to stir up something that you have no clue about.

Well, Chiefdawg, I AM Dariel Daniel. As you know, I sign my name and let people know who I am. hiding behind a fake name shows your lack of courage to take a stand on the issue and let people know how you feel.

No clue? Right...I spent 40 years in the classroom- more than all your board members combined. I just left Texas and taught in a school with a 99% graduation rate with a multicultural student body of 5,000. Yes, I have many ideas that would help our deplorable schools. not once has any board member asked me about my ideas. They spent all their time smearing challengers and avoiding the issues. An embarrassing 63% graduation rate, 9,000 discipline problems/year, firing art/music teachers, closing neighborhood schools, and serving the GARBAGE to our students are only the tip of the iceberg. dig deep for money? Probably the biggest joke of all...TCSS spent over a BILLION DOLLARS ($1,000,000,000.00) in the last 10 years for mediocrity you and 'Little Sid' seem to enjoy. They tax the elderly in "Move the Mountain' eligibility. A budget of $100,000,000.00 a year, PLUS your SPLOST dollars and look what we have now. My 'ego' needs nothing.

I,however, will publish my book on "Developing Wrestling Champions" very soon to feed it.

Yeah, dedicated and caring...how about getting something done?

Dawg, ...grow some and tell us who you are. I say you don't have any.
