A handful of prep football players in Troup County have one more game to play.

Players from Callaway, LaGrange and Troup will participate in an all-star football game that will be played in the Georgia Dome on Dec. 22.

The event will include six youth football games and two high-school all-star games.

The first high-school game, the North Georgia vs. Central Georgia Senior All-Atar Bowl, will be played at 3 p.m., and that’s the game the local players will participate in.

The Atlanta East-West Metro Senior All-Star Bowl will be held at 7 p.m.

LaGrange head coach Donnie Branch said it’s a “big deal” for the players to get one final opportunity to represent their high school on the gridiron.

“As much as anything, it gives them a chance to play football against a bunch of good players,” Branch said. “That’ll be a big deal for them.”

LaGrange will have three players in the game, defensive linemen D.J. Hudson and Chris Manning, and wide receiver Dee Smith.

Callaway’s two players will be offensive lineman Michael “Moose” DeLoach and free safety Cortez Leonard.

Troup has three representatives in the game, offensive linemen Levi Cornwell, offensive and defensive linemen Maurice Swain, and wide receiver and defensive back Ricky Frazier.

The eight local players will be a part of the Central squad that will be under the direction of Frank Vohun, a long-time high-school coach in Georgia.

“I’m real excited about this game,” Vohun said. “Each one of these young men who play in this game will have a great experience playing in the Georgia Dome representing their family and school.”

The all-star game, and the festivities that accompany it, will give those players a chance to make an impression on college coaches and scouts.

“These all-star games provide additional exposure for student athletes seeking scholarship opportunities,” said John Starr, the event director. “In addition, the games are a reward for players’ outstanding efforts and commitment to the sport.”

The eight local players are each being rewarded for exceptional seasons, and careers.

At LaGrange, Hudson and Manning were anchors on the defensive line the past few seasons, and Smith has wrapped up an extraordinary prep career.

Smith caught more than 100 combined passes his past two seasons, and he had nearly 60 catches with 11 touchdowns this season.

Branch said all three players have attracted the interest of college coaches.

“They’ll all go play somewhere, it’s a matter of where they fit in,” Branch said. “They’re all being recruited.”

For Callaway, DeLoach and Leonard were key parts of a team that went 11-2 and made it to the second round of the state playoffs.

Leonard, who played at Troup in 2011, was a standout safety for Callaway, and he was also an impact player at running back.

DeLoach anchored an offensive line that helped Callaway’s offense put up huge numbers.

For Troup, Cornwell has been an anchor on the offensive line the past few seasons, Swain was a force as an offensive lineman and defensive lineman, and Frazier was one of the team’s most versatile and effective players as a big-play wide receiver and a lock-down cornerback.
