Sanders, who was an impact defensive lineman for the LaGrange Grangers last season, was invited to participate in the prestigious Georgia Athletic Coaches Association North-South all-star football game in Columbus later this month.
Sanders has declined the invitation, though, so he concentrate on basketball.
Sanders was a late arrival on the basketball team since the football team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs, and LaGrange football coach Donnie Branch said he doesn’t want to fall further behind.
“He’s declining playing because of basketball,” Branch said. “He could have played, but he’s already behind in basketball. He didn’t want to miss another week of basketball.”
As part of the festivities and practices surrounding the game, Sanders would have had to miss an entire week of basketball.
“It wasn’t a good deal at the time,” Branch said.
A lot of players use all-star games as an opportunity to attract the attention of college teams, but Sanders is already on the radar of a lot of programs.
Early in November, Sanders made a verbal commitment to the University of Tennessee.
Since then, though, Tennessee has fired head coach Derek Dooley, and the school has yet to name a new coach.
In the meantime, Sanders has received offers from a handful of other schools.
Overall, Sanders has received offers from more than 10 schools.
For the moment, Sanders is concentrating on basketball.
He missed the team’s first two games, but he was in uniform for Tuesday’s game against Newnan.
The 6-foot-5 Sanders will be counted on to provide a strong inside presence for the Grangers
