The Callaway Cavaliers are on the board.

After opening the season with back-to-back losses to Troup and LaGrange, the Cavaliers picked up their first win of the season Friday night at Greenville High.

The Cavaliers overcame a five-point deficit with four minutes remaining in the game to pull off a 55-49 victory.

Nehemiah Jones paced the Cavaliers with 17 points, and Tyrell Tigner added 13 points.

The Lady Cavaliers, meanwhile, improved to 2-1 with a 73-49 victory.

In the boys’ game, the Cavaliers led 26-24 at the half, and they extended that lead to 33-24 thanks to a 7-0 run covering the first two minutes of the third period.

By the close of the period, the Patriots were within four at 42-38, and they scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to build a 45-42 lead.

The Cavaliers weren’t bothered, though, and after falling behind by as many as five points, they tied it at 49-49 on a Brandon Bridges basket with 3:13 remaining.

With 1:50 left, Jamia Hopson’s reverse lay-in gave the Cavaliers a 51-49 lead, and they went on to finish the game on an 11-0 run to win going away.

There was no suspense in the girls’ game.

With six players scoring at least eight points, the Lady Cavaliers rolled to the win.

Callaway led 18-7 after the first quarter, and the lead was 37-16 at the half.

The Lady Cavaliers continued to add to their lead in the second half en route to the 73-49 win.

“I was very impressed. I was proud of them,” Callaway coach Deyano Martin said. “I thought we played hard from the tip to the end. You can’t ask for much more than that.”

Martin was especially pleased with the offensive effort.

“Offensively, I was happy,” he said. “Everybody moved the ball around and distributed and were real unselfish. We played really unselfish on offense.”

Titiyuana Gates led Callaway with 15 points, and Tanesha Johnson and Jamonica Dean added 11 points apiece.

Monica Jackson chipped in with 10 points.

Callaway’s teams will visit LaGrange High on Tuesday.
