It’s back to the drawing board for the Callaway boys’ basketball team.

After losing a nail-biter to LaGrange High on Tuesday night 60-53, the Cavaliers are 1-3 on the season and are looking for some answers.

They’ve been right there with a chance to win all three games they’ve lost, but they’ve been unable to finish things off.

Tuesday against LaGrange, the Cavaliers let one slip through their fingers after a fourth-quarter rally that saw the Cavaliers tie the game at 53 before LaGrange finished the game on a 7-0 run over the last 70 seconds.

Callaway coach Terry Hayes’ stern facial expression told the story of the outcome as he sat alone on a bench in the team’s locker room afterward.

“We gave one away again,” Hayes said. “We’re our own worst enemy. Turnovers down the stretch, a missed free throw here, a missed shot there, a bad angle shot. we’re our own worst enemy. We’ve got to get better, that’s all.”

Callaway opened the season dropping a three-point decision to Troup 55-52.

Then in their home opener, the Cavaliers lost 47-42 to LaGrange.

The Cavaliers then got one in the win column, 55-49 against Greenville, before the latest disappointment against LaGrange.

Callaway had a chance to win and had the momentum late in the game.

Senior Patrick Strickland scored six straight points to pull the Cavaliers even with 1:42 left, but the Cavalier balloon deflated and LaGrange scored the points needed to win the ball game.

Kwame Brown flipped a soft shot up that slowly found the bottom of the net to make it 55-53.

Justyn Olson was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to make it a four-point advantage.

Then to make matters worse for Callaway, Granger Drew Moody was intentionally fouled under his own basket. Moody hit 1-of-2 free throws, and more importantly, LaGrange maintained possession because of the flagrant foul.

“I give LaGrange credit. They made the plays when they had to,” Hayes said.

So when asked what he was going to do next, Hayes said, “The plan is we’re going back to the drawing board and get ready for Troup and try to instill some discipline in this team.”

Callaway was led in scoring by senior Tyrell Tigner, who poured in 25 points. Nehemiah Jones had 10 points and Terry Godwin scored eight points.

Callaway will host Troup on Friday.
