During the 2011-2012 season, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers won four games in the regular season, and it took them until the 19th game of the season to reach that total.
On Saturday, the Lady Cavaliers rallied to upend Lanett to once again reach four wins, but this season they’ve done it in six games.
Callaway charged back from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat Lanett 47-46 and improve to 4-2.
“We had five total (wins) last year, and one of those was a tournament win,” said Deyano Martin, Callaway’s second-year head coach. “We already won the same amount as we won the whole regular season. We’re getting a lot better through hard work.”
Martin said he was immensely proud of the way the players didn’t pack it in Saturday after falling behind big.
Lanett charged to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter, and it extended that lead to 32-14 at the half.
The Lady Cavaliers took a big chunk out of that deficit in the third period, and they trailed 38-31 heading into the final quarter.
Callaway rallied to take a one-point lead late, but a turnover with a couple of seconds left gave Lanett one final chance, but the shot went awry, and that was that.
“It was a great effort,” Martin said.
Tanesha Johnson paced Callaway with 15 points, with 11 of those points coming in the third quarter.
Monica Jackson added 12 points, and Terriyunna Dunson scored 10 points.
Jackson got into foul trouble and had to sit out the third quarter, and according to Martin, “that’s when Tanesha took over and got us back in it.”
Callaway won the game in large part because of its prowess from the free-throw line.
The Lady Cavaliers made 10 of their 12 attempts from the free-throw line, a major turnaround from previous games where they struggled mightily from the charity stripe.
Callaway now takes a little time off before opening its Region 4-AAA schedule against Rockmart on Jan. 4.
Despite the encouraging start to the season, Martin said there’s still plenty to work on.
“We’ll work on the fundamentals, making some of those layups, and putting the ball on the floor when we don’t need to, stuff like that and we’ll get ready for region,” Martin said.
