Whether a team is 10-0, or 0-10, everything is equal this week as region play gets under way in Region 5-AAAA and Region 4-AAA.
The teams from Callaway, LaGrange and Troup will all look to get their league schedules off to a fast start when they play their region openers Friday night.
“It’s a cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason,” LaGrange boys’ coach Mike Pauley said about teams basically starting over when region play begins. “Everybody’s 0-0.”
LaGrange’s teams will get region play started Friday night at home against Shaw.
Pauley’s team brings a 9-2 record into the game after losing its final two games in the LaGrange Toyota Basketball Classic over the weekend.
Shaw, expected to be one of the region’s better teams, is 6-4.
“Shaw is very good,” Pauley said. “Their guards are back, and they’re really good.”
On the girls’ side, the Lady Grangers are 10-1 after falling in the championship game of a tournament at Auburn High Saturday night.
LaGrange doesn’t figure to face too much of a challenge against a Shaw team that is 0-9.
Troup’s teams will jump into Region 5-AAAA competition with road games at Alexander Friday night.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers (0-4) will be trying to secure their first win of the season, while Alexander brings a 4-6 record into the game.
In the boys’ game, Alexander brings a six-game winning streak and an 8-2 record into the matchup with Troup, which is 5-4.
Troup’s teams will host non-region foe Heard County on Saturday.
In Region 4-AAA, Callaway’s teams will open with region games on Friday and Saturday, with all of the games on the road.
Callaway will visit Rockmart on Friday before traveling to Chapel Hill on Saturday.
In Friday’s games, the Lady Cavaliers (4-2) will look to continue their early-season success when they face a struggling Rockmart (2-7) team.
In the boys’ game, the Cavaliers (1-5) have been in all of their games, but they’ve had trouble finishing.
The Cavaliers will look to reverse that trend when they face a 2-7 Rockmart squad.
On Saturday, the Cavaliers will face a Chapel Hill (0-10) team that is still looking for its first win.
Chapel Hill’s girls’ team, meanwhile, is off to a fast start with an 8-2 record.
In GISA basketball, the LaGrange Academy teams will begin their Region 4-AA schedules this week after a long break.
LaGrange Academy will host region foe Griffin Christian on Friday before welcoming a non-region opponent, Trinity Christian on Saturday.
Lafayette Christian School’s teams, meanwhile, have also been off for a couple of weeks, and they’ll resume their GISA Region 4-A schedules Friday at Solid Rock Academy.
Dawson Street Christian School’s teams will visit region opponent Oak Mountain on Friday, and they’ll step out of the region to face Lee Scott Academy in Auburn, Ala. On Saturday.
