Callaway High grapplers will make the trek to Murray County to wrestle in Area 2-AAA duals today and Saturday.

It’s a big area with 13 schools, and only two teams will make it through to the state duals.

The tournament will be held at North Murray High, and it’ll be a homecoming of sorts for Kurt Napier, who graduated from Murray County High School in 2004.

Callaway will have a hard time competing in the tournament because of a lack of wrestlers.

For various reasons, Callaway has left several weight classes unfilled this season, in some cases having to forfeit as many as six matches per meet.

With each forfeit worth six points to the opponent, it doesn’t take a math expert to calculate what 36 points could potentially mean.

Still, Napier is positive his kids can learn something from participating at North Murray this weekend, and regardless of what happens, Callaway will still have the traditional area tournament to look forward to where individual wrestlers have a chance to qualify for state.

Joining Callaway at the area meet are Adairsville, Carver, Cartersville, Central-Carroll, Chapel Hill, Coahulla Creek, Gordon Central, Lakeville-Fort Oglethorpe, North Murray, Ringgold, Rockmart and Sonoraville.

“In the most perfect situation, we would have 12 wrestlers if everybody wanted to show (today) and wrestle,” Napier said of his numbers. “If everything just worked out in a dream scenario, it will just depend on the kids. I have several injuries I can’t do anything about. Hopefully we will bring 10.”

Napier said part of the problem is a number of wrestlers are around the same weight.

“There’s three or four guys who weigh the same weight,” Napier said. “We’ve got numbers, but it’s not helping us. I think it will be a good experience for our guys. We’re trying to start from here and build the program if they can go up there and see what it’s like at the area duals like maybe they can take this and learn and not be intimidated by the atmosphere next year.”
