Everybody got to play.

To LaGrange High girls’ coach Jan Jones, that was the best thing about Friday’s 60-23 victory over Shaw in the Region 5-AAAA opener for both teams.

The Lady Grangers led by nearly 30 points at the half, and Jones emptied the bench in the second half and got everyone a chance to spend some time on the floor.

LaGrange improved to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in region play.

“We were able to let a lot of people play that don’t usually get to play,” Jones said. “That’s going to help us in the long run.”

One of the players who took advantage of the increased playing time was senior Danielle Dowell, who led all scorers with 12 points.

“She came off the bench and knocked down some threes and played really well for us,” Jones said. “She’s a senior, so it was good to see her shine tonight. She can help us down the road.”

One of the regulars, Brittany Tatum, scored 10 points, and fellow starters Steara Mitchell and KaBrenna Smith added eight points apiece.

Breanna Grant scored seven points, and Andrea Heflin chipped in with six points.

LaGrange surged to a 22-4 lead after the opening period, and the lead was 37-9 at the half.

The Lady Grangers were up 50-20 through three periods, and they extended the lead in the final quarter.

“Just getting everybody in and getting them a lot of minutes is going to help us long-term,” Jones said.
