It was no contest.

In a showdown between two first-place teams in Region 4-AAA Tuesday night, the Callaway Cavaliers rolled to a 66-53 victory over the visiting Central-Carroll Lions.

The Cavaliers (6-6 overall, 5-1 in region play) were clinging to a six-point lead with a little more than four minutes remaining, but they salted things away with an 11-2 run that put them on top 66-51 with 1:23 remaining.

Nehemiah Jones had a big game for the Cavaliers with 25 points, and Dre Martin added 10 points.

Jones said it was the team’s defense that made the difference.

“Defense came through, and we capitalized on offense when we needed to and got it done,” Jones said.

The Cavaliers had their offensive struggles in the first half, but they did enough to grab a 25-21 lead at the break.

The Cavaliers charged out to a 32-25 lead with 4:53 left in the third period, but the Lions rallied to take a 39-37 lead a little more than three minutes later.

The Cavaliers reclaimed the lead on a Martin 3-pointer, and they finished the period on an 8-0 run to go up 45-39 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers’ lead was still six when Martin made a free throw with 4:13, and the rout was on.

Jones scored eight of his team’s next 10 points, and what had been a competitive game was all but over.

“It was a great win for us, but we’ll go back to the film room tomorrow and go back to work,” Callaway head coach Terry Hayes said.

Callaway wraps up the first half of its region schedule when it visits B.E.S.T. Academy in Atlanta on Friday.

The Cavaliers will be back home on Saturday to take on Rockmart.
