Legacy Museum on Main will host a reception honoring the artists featured in the “Folk Crafts of West Georgia” exhibit now on display at the museum. The reception will be on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Legacy Museum, 136 Main Street in LaGrange. The public is invited to attend.

Folk crafts have been an important part of the heritage of Troup County and West Georgia since the earliest days of the area when people made quilts to keep warm, carved tools, or wove baskets to carry fruit. Today, residents still carry on these traditions.

Crafters being honored include carvers Rev. Harold Lawrence of First Methodist Church, Randall Allen, Ron Cannon and the descendants of Henry and Carl Brown. Quilters will be honored including the Pleasant Grove Church quilters, and the families and friends of Katherine Nelson Carrie Glanton. Potters from Rock Mills Pottery (formerly Rock Springs Bottling Works) of nearby Randolph County, Alabama, will also be recognized.

Eventually, the utilitarian side of many items gave way purely ornamental crafts. This exhibit will feature the more ornamental variety of crafts such as quilts, baskets, wood carvings and bowls, and totem poles from Troup and surrounding counties. Items on display date from the 1850s to recent days. There is no charge for admission.
