The Callaway Cavaliers overcame a slow start to pick up a huge road win Tuesday night at Central-Carroll.

The Cavaliers (13-7 overall) moved to 12-1 in Region 4-AAA, and they can sew up the region’s regular-season title with a home win over B.E.S.T. Academy on Friday.

The Cavaliers found themselves down 14 at the half after a dreary second quarter.

The game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, but the Lions outscored the Cavaliers 22-8 in the second period to seize a 30-16 lead.

The Cavaliers responded in the third period, outscoring the Lions 18-11 to get within seven at 41-34 heading into the final quarter.

The Cavaliers took their first lead since early in the second quarter with 44 seconds remaining in the game, and they held on thanks in part to some clutch free-throw shooting.

Brandon Bridges, who led the Cavaliers with 23 points, was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Dre Martin added nine points, and Nehemiah Jones scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

In Tuesday’s girls’ game, the Lady Cavaliers (13-7, 8-5 in region play) were in the game at the half, but the Lady Lions dominated the action in the final two quarters to take a 59-29 victory.

The Lady Cavaliers were down 12-8 after the first quarter, and they trailed 24-16 at the half.

By the close of the third quarter, Central was up 44-24.

Monica Jackson led Callaway with 10 points.

Callaway will host Coretta S. King in its regular-season finale Friday night.
