Kemp is a senior soccer player for the LaGrange High girls’ soccer team, and despite not playing as a junior because of an injury, she’s already established a memorable legacy at the school after setting single-season scoring records in back-to-back years.
So Kemp had numerous options when it came time to choose a college, and she picked Kennesaw State after getting a look at the school’s soccer stadium, which opened in 2010 and is billed as the largest women’s only soccer stadium in the world.
The stadium is also home to a women’s professional soccer team.
Kemp figures if a school is that serious about soccer, then it’s the place for her.
“Everything there is so new. I like that,” Kemp said. “And there, soccer is their big thing. That’s another reason I chose there. I didn’t want to go somewhere where soccer isn’t big.”
Kemp made her decision official on Tuesday when she signed her letter of intent to play soccer at Kennesaw State, and she’ll be a part of the team when it opens its season in August.
Before making the leap to the collegiate ranks, Kemp has some unfinished business in high school.
The last time she played a high-school soccer game was in the final game of the 2011 season when she scored a goal in a 5-2 loss to Chestatee in the first round of the state tournament.
That game capped a second straight magnificent season for Kemp, who had more than 50 goals in her freshman and sophomore seasons combined.
In the fall of 2011, Kemp played for the softball team, but she suffered a knee injury that season, and it forced her to miss the 2012 soccer season.
“It was hard,” Kemp said of missing an entire season. “But they’ve been really nice around the school about supporting me.”
Kemp is back and ready to go now, and she’s looking forward to a season that is about to kick off.
Kemp will be a part of a veteran team that includes a bunch of seniors.
“I’m very excited about this coming season,” Kemp said. “I think we’re going to be really good this year. We have every position. And I’m ready to come back and play this season. I think this will be great for us as a team.”
