An attempt at catching a man with an active bench warrant, led to three additional charges for the man, who fled form police by jumping from a moving vehicle.

Reports say that shortly after noon Wednesday, Officer Greg Civers was attempting to catch up with a silver 2005 Dodge Neon in the 500 block of Daniel Street that was being driven by Michael Thomas, 37, of LaGrange, in reference to serving an active bench warrant.

Thomas began to drive at a high rate of speed and attempted to make a left turn onto Ware Street, but ran off the roadway. He then exited the vehicle, while it was still in gear, and ran north into the wooded area towards Johnson Street, with the vehicle later rolling backwards into a fence at Twin Cedars Group Home on East Depot Street. Civers radioed to other responding officers the direction that Thomas was headed, and Thomas was later taken into custody by the responding officers.

During Thomas’ arrest officers recovered five small clear bags of suspected marijuana, $1,710 in currency and three cell phones.

He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, leaving the scene of an accident and obstruction of an officer.

Damages

• An employee of Ideal Electric in the 200 block of East Depot Street said that someone damaged three windows and a mailbox, causing $315 in damage.
