Games called on account of bad weather, or even darkness on fields that don’t have lights isn’t an uncommon occurrence.

But a game called because a field has been reserved for a youth baseball game?

That was a new one on LaGrange Academy baseball coach Korey Noles.

In the sixth inning of Thursday’s game between LaGrange Academy and Trinity Christian, Noles was informed that the game had to end right then to make way for a local recreation-league game in Dublin.

The Warriors were down 3-0 at the time, and that’s the way the game ended.

LaGrange Academy would have had one more inning to try to make up the deficit, but it wasn’t to be.

“We had to stop in the sixth inning,” Noles said. “Last year, they played (in LaGrange) twice, but this year we played (in Dublin) on a rec field. And the game got called.”

Noles, who played at LaGrange High, Columbus State and in the pro ranks for a few years said he hadn’t experienced anything like that before.

“That’s the way it goes,” said Noles, who added that he was taken by surprise when told that the game was being called.

Senior Zach Breland got the start and pitched five solid innings, and Brandon Haynes pitched one inning.

Haynes, an eighth-grader, has been an effective pitcher for the Warriors.

“So far, he’s been pretty reliable out of the bullpen,” Noles said. “He came in and give us a strong inning.”

While the pitching and defense were solid, the Warriors struggled at the plate, although Noles said the guys were making good contact.

“I thought we swung the bat pretty good, but it was right where a defender was every time,” Noles said. “We played good enough to win if we could get some hits to go our way.”

The Warriors dropped to 0-3 on the young season, and they’ll try to get their elusive first win today at Flint River Academy.

“They’re practicing hard,” Noles said. “We need to get that first win under our belts.”
