Two Troup County softball teams are returning home with state championships, and another one came up just short of a title.
In the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament, the Troup County 9-10 and 11-12 teams captured the championship trophies, while the 13-14 all-stars dropped a pair of heart-breakers.
In the 9-10 division, Troup blasted Rome 15-3 to cap an unbeaten tournament run.
“With the good work they put in, I’m happy to see them win the tournament,” Troup coach Devin Arnold said.
In the 11-12 tournament Troup overcame a 4-3 first-inning deficit to beat Whitfield County 12-4.
Troup scored six runs in the sixth inning to put it away.
“It was a total team effort,” head coach Randy Waldroup said.
In the 13-14 tournament, Troup was unable to beat Spalding County in two attempts.
Spalding County beat Troup 9-7 to force a deciding game, and Spalding capped its title run with a 10-9 victory.
BASEBALL: The Troup County 13-year-old all-star team began its stay in the Dixie Boys Baseball state tournament with a convincing 11-1 win over Whitfield County.
Dre Leonard and Matt Morten combined to get the win, and Morten was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
“The whole team from top to bottom was solid today,” Troup coach Andy Buchanan said.
Troup was set to play Newton County on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The winner of that game advances to the championship round of the four-team tournament.
In the 13-14 state tournament at the Harris Baseball Complex, the Troup all-stars will play their first game at 1 p.m.
The other eight teams in the tournament opened on Saturday.
